X confirms plans for NSFW Communities

A day after researchers discovered X’s plans to test NSFW adult communities, the company confirmed that Community admins can now label their settings as “Adult Content” to avoid automatic content filtering. Otherwise, NSFW content will soon be filtered across X’s Communities by default. Communities are smaller groups with their own feeds on X outside of the main timeline.

The changes confirm earlier tests of NSFW communities and suggest a shift towards embracing adult content on the platform. NSFW content has played a significant role on X, with internal documents revealing that roughly 13% of Twitter posts included NSFW content such as nude photos, videos, and pornography. Adult content was one of the fastest-growing genres on the platform.

The rise of spam bots promoting NSFW content on X was also detailed, highlighting the platform’s increasing focus on adult content. Updates to X’s Communities now allow NSFW-focused communities to designate themselves to avoid automatic filtering.

These changes were promoted by owner Elon Musk and CEO Linda Yaccarino as key to X’s future growth plans during an all-hands meeting. Musk highlighted the rapid growth of the Communities product, stating that there is still work to be done to make Communities compelling.

In addition to allowing Community admins to label adult content, X will introduce new features such as a Ban button, revamped reporting pages, improved post sorting options, and a Media tab for Android users. The platform also plans to promote top posts and communities, provide Community Analytics to moderators, and introduce support for audio Spaces in Communities.

The post hints at a new user interface for posts and replies on the platform. X did not provide an ETA for these upcoming features.
