VC Arjun Sethi talks a big game about selling his company-picking strategies to other investors; he says they’re buying it

Arjun Sethi exudes confidence, asserting his dominance in the world of private data with the conviction of a seasoned expert. In a recent Zoom conversation, Sethi boldly claims that he will have access to 50% of the world’s private data within five years, making it impossible for anyone to compete against him. His authoritative tone echoes that of renowned stock market guru, Warren Buffett.

As a co-founder of Tribe Capital, Sethi discusses Termina, a subscription-based AI platform tailored for quantitative diligence. The platform, recently spun out by Tribe, aims to enhance investment results for its users. However, questions arise about why Sethi and Tribe would empower other investment firms to improve their competitiveness with Termina. Additionally, there are concerns about the trustworthiness of Termina, as it relies on customer data for continuous improvement.

Termina, which soft-launched last month with two products, offers a dashboard for evaluating a company’s health in comparison to others in its dataset, combined with proprietary customer data. Another product focuses on analyzing external market factors. Sethi describes Termina as equivalent to having the capabilities of 1,000 associates at your disposal.

Though Sethi refrains from naming early customers, he mentions pension funds, sovereign funds, and private equity firms as part of its clientele. He emphasizes Termina’s advantage of leveraging transactional data from 1,500 companies to enhance benchmarking capabilities for investors.

Despite concerns about data security, Sethi assures that Tribe’s investment focus differs from Termina’s target market, making the two entities distinct. He highlights his reputation and trust-building efforts as factors that will drive investor confidence in Termina.

With a team that includes familiar faces from his previous ventures, Sethi is confident in Termina’s abilities and aims to establish it as a leading player in the private markets. He also hints at a broader vision for Tribe’s future growth.

While both Tribe and Termina face challenges and uncertainties in their respective industries, Sethi remains steadfast in his belief in the superiority of Termina’s product and data. He envisions a future where Termina sets new standards in investment decision-making.
