TechCrunch Minute: You’re likely seeing less news and politics on Instagram. Here’s why

As the election cycle heats up, Instagram and Threads are reducing the amount of political content appearing in many users’ feeds. These changes, which limit the reach of political content from accounts users don’t already follow, are now in place by default. If you’re interested in seeing more political content in your feed, you can refer to our guide on adjusting Instagram’s political settings here.

Meta has taken steps to minimize the visibility of news and political content on its platforms, especially content that is algorithmically recommended rather than shared directly by individuals or accounts. Threads will not actively promote news, based on comments made by its head, Adam Mosseri, last year. Additionally, Facebook is discontinuing its News Tab as it continues to block news content in Canada due to an ongoing dispute over legislation requiring platforms to compensate publishers for content.

So, what kind of posts and topics will Instagram consider as political? The answer is broad and vague, encompassing anything “potentially related to things like laws, elections, or social topics.” To find out more about why these changes have been implemented and what it reveals about Meta’s priorities across its various social platforms, be sure to check out today’s episode below.
