Back to the future? – Med-Tech Innovation – TechToday

Ian Bolland reflects on the start of the year in medical technology in the UK, and bids farewell.

As I prepared this issue of Med-Tech Innovation News, the early days of January saw my Twitter feed light up with government cabinet members celebrating the opportunity for UK businesses to join the Horizon Programme. Sorry, re-joining.

Earlier, I had praised the government for rejoining the Horizon Programme, calling it a mature decision after years of divisive arguments. However, it was hard to ignore that some of those celebrating were the same ones who pushed for Brexit and now want to distance themselves from anything with a hint of “Europe” in it.

This highlights the uncertainty and wasted time caused by political games in recent years. With an upcoming election in the UK, polls suggest a desire for change. Hopefully, a new government will bring stability for industries like medical technology, making trade with neighboring countries easier.

A change in government won’t solve all challenges in the sector. Economic conditions remain tough, with the UK manufacturing sector shrinking for the 17th consecutive month and the overall economy facing a possible recession.

On a personal note, this will be my final article here. After almost four years as editor of this title and over five years at Rapid News, it’s time for a new chapter. It’s been a privilege to cover the medical technology industry during such a pivotal time, and I’m grateful for the experience.

While I move on, I will still be involved in medical technology in a different capacity. You may even see me at the Med-Tech Innovation Expo 2024. So, this isn’t goodbye, just see you later.
